For our Cameroon Country Office Kudu Zombo Programme, we are looking for a dynamic and committed Primate Monitoring Officer.

Location: Dipikar Island (gorilla habituation site) in Campo Ma’an National Park, with periodic missions to Campo.

Duration: two (02) years

Mission of the Department

As part of the implementation of biodiversity conservation activities within the Kudu Zombo cross-border landscape, the programme is developing specific actions to protect great apes, particularly gorillas. To this end, a structured process of habituating groups of gorillas is being carried out in order to enable, in the long term, the collection of reliable scientific data, long-term ecological monitoring and the controlled development of responsible ecotourism activities.

The habituation process is a sensitive and strategic step. It requires rigorous planning, a constant technical presence in the field, and strict supervision of the tracking teams and technical staff. The aim is to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals, the safety of staff, compliance with scientific ethical protocols, gradual and controlled approach to the target groups.

Given the biological, operational and reputational issues associated with this process, it is essential to have strong leadership capable of ensuring effective team coordination, compliance with technical standards, risk management and the regular production of high-quality reports to guide decision-making.

Major Functions

The Primate Monitoring Officer is responsible for supervising and coordinating all activities related to behavioural, health and spatial monitoring of gorilla groups undergoing habituation. He/she oversees the collection of relevant data, supervises field teams and implements scientific habituation protocols, including the management of gorilla habituation camps.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate daily habituation activities for targeted gorilla groups.
  • Supervise teams of trackers and habituation assistants.
  • Actively participate in field trips to observe gorilla behaviour and monitor their tolerance level to human presence.
  • Implement protocols for collecting behavioural, health and location data.
  • Ensure the quality and analysis of the data collected (via GPS, cyber tracker, physical observation sheets, photos, videos, sound, etc.).
  • Produce regular reports on the progress of the habituation process.
  • Work closely with veterinarians, ecologists and other specialists to ensure comprehensive monitoring.
  • Identify potential risks (stress, disease, aggression) and propose mitigation measures.
  • Design and implement a protocol for managing gorilla habituation camps.
  • Train and build the capacity of local team members.
  • Provide technical management of trackers in the gorilla habituation programme.
  • Ensure that equipment is available for fieldwork, planning its allocation as required.
  • Ensure the management, security and proper use of all technical and scientific equipment made available to them, in collaboration with the logistics and maintenance assistant.

Profile:

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum qualification: four-year degree in biology, natural resource management, conservation, database design and management, protected area management or related subjects.
  • At least 4 years of practical experience in primate monitoring or habituation (ideally gorillas).
  • Proven experience in processing photos and videos from camera traps or other wildlife monitoring studies.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Familiarity with GIS analysis (particularly ArcGIS or QGIS).
  • Proven skills in statistics and data analysis (Excel, other relevant software).
  • Database design and management, protected area management or related field.
  • Proven skills in behavioural observation and ethology.
  • Good physical condition for sometimes demanding field activities.
  • Ability to work in remote areas and under difficult conditions.
  • Knowledge of geolocation tools (GPS, GIS) and databases.
  • Organisational skills, scientific rigour and team spirit.

For our Impact Programme for Integrated Forest Landscape Management in the Congo Basin (GEF 7), we are looking for a dynamic and committed Project Administrative Assistant.

Duration: One (01) year renewable based on performance and budget availability.

Mission of the Department:

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved the 6-year Congo Basin Sustainable Landscapes Impact Program (CBSL IP) which encompasses a regional component, managed by UNEP, and several national child projects in the countries of the Congo Basin.

The Cameroon child project is managed by WWF-US as the GEF Agency, executed by the Ministry of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) with WWF Cameroon as Financial Administrator. It addresses the drivers of forest loss and degradation through strategies aimed at strengthening the integrated management of Cameroon’s globally important forest landscapes in the Congo Basin, to secure its biological integrity and increase economic opportunities and livelihoods for forest dependent people.

Over the six-year project period, these strategies will be addressed through the implementation of five components:

  1. Mainstreaming integrated land use planning (LUP) and management.
  2. Improving management effectiveness and governance of high conservation value forests, and targeted interventions to protect their endangered species.
  3. Advancing sustainable forest management (SFM) through non-timber forest product (NTFP) and hardwood value chains.
  4. Increasing benefit generation from biodiversity through sustainable tourism development.
  5. Monitoring and evaluation (M&E), knowledge management (KM), and regional coordination.

The project targets key Cameroon trans-frontier forest landscape, which stretches from the Rio Campo seascape on the coast, across the Cameroon segments of the Tri-National Dja- Odzala-Minkebe (TRIDOM) and Sangha Tri-National (TNS) landscapes towards the east. The target areas for project interventions under each strategy are dependent on site-specific considerations, including the potential to achieve meaningful results in the six-year project period, baselines and available co-financing, and the ability to manage all environmental and social safeguard considerations. Several partners and sub-contractors will be involved or hired for the implementation of different project tasks. Their contribution will need to be coordinated and constantly monitored.

In support to the management of this Project, we are seeking an Administrative Assistant who will provide support to the Project Management Unit (PMU) staffs carrying out their duties.

Major functions:

The Administrative Assistant will support the Project Manager and other PMU staff in carrying out their duties, through the following tasks.

Profile:

Required Qualifications and experience

  •     Higher National Diploma (HND) in administrative / bilingual secretariat studies or equivalent in related field.
  •     At least 3 (three) to 5 (five) years of experience in a similar position in a well-structured organization; experience in an international non-profit organization would be an asset.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent organizational and prioritization competence, with attention to details.
  • Proactive attitude and ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Excellent team player with good networking and interpersonal skills.

Mission of the Department

For decades, WWF has been supporting the Cameroonian government in the sustainable management of natural resources. In the TNS and TRIDOM landscapes (eastern and southern regions of Cameroon), where it has been active since 1990, WWF supports the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife, the private sector, indigenous peoples and local communities in the sustainable management of forest concessions, communal and community forests.

For decades, WWF has been supporting the Cameroonian government in the sustainable management of natural resources. In the TNS and TRIDOM landscapes (eastern and southern regions of Cameroon), where it has been active since 1990, WWF supports the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife, the private sector, indigenous peoples and local communities in the sustainable management of forest concessions, communal and community forests.

Despite joint efforts to combat illegal practices that contribute to biodiversity loss, the rate of deforestation and degradation of natural resources has increased over the years. The main factors contributing to the degradation of natural resources in Cameroon are the conversion of medium and large plantations into agricultural areas, as well as small-scale agriculture, fuelwood harvesting, mining and infrastructure development. Illegal and unsustainable logging has been identified as one of the main causes of forest degradation in Cameroon.

Despite the efforts of CSOs in combatting environmental crimes, this threat persists and even the safety of CSO personnel deployed to detect and report confirmed cases of environmental crimes is not always guaranteed. As part of efforts to improve the protection of NGO personnel involved in combating environmental crimes in the TNS and TRIDOM landscapes, WWF Cameroon intends to recruit a Volunteer.

Major Functions

The Forest volunteer is supporting the implementation of the project entitled “CMR/Fighting Climate Change and Loss of Biodiversity through  implementation and follow up of  related activities under Outcome 4: “Contribution to enhanced protection for civil society organisations that collaborate in the detection and reporting of suspected environmental crimes” This role ensures alignment with annual work plan.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The volunteer will be responsible for:

  • Maintain permanent contact with CSO network members.
  • Support elaboration and reviewing of project action plan.
  • Contributing to the CSO strengthening capacities on their protection.
  • Facilitate the process of renewing and disseminate CSO protection tools/mechanisms.
  • Assist the project coordinator in project tasks.
  • Represent WWF in forums whenever they are mandated.

Profile:

Major Functions

In a spirit of excellence, integrity, and dedication, the Driver contributes to the effective implementation of the Conservation Department’s activities within the Cameroon Country Office (CCO) by ensuring safe, reliable and efficient transport services, as well as logistical support. The Driver supports the Programme’s goal of reshaping landscapes for conservation and sustainable development by facilitating the safe movement of staff, partners, and equipment to project/programme sites. Through professional driving, proper vehicle management, and compliance with safety and administrative procedures, the Driver plays a key role in enabling field operations that contribute to protecting wildlife, strengthening resilient livelihoods for local communities, and supporting climate stability through forest conservation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Driving
  2. Drive the vehicles in complete safety, ensuring that all documents are available and in good condition in the vehicle, and paying particular attention to: [TN1]
  3. Maintaining the cleanliness of vehicles, both internally and externally.
  4. Complying with internal regulations on vehicle management.
  5. Transporting and accompanying staff during missions and official functions.
  6. Logistics / Admin
  7. Collect goods from suppliers.
  8. Support the Logistics Manager in the purchase of goods and services.
  9. Collect various pro-formas and invoices, as required by the office.
  10. Carry out administrative support activities: collect money from the bank, drop off documents at various offices, etc.
  11. Ensure that requests for services or materials are duly approved before processing.
  12. Enter orders into the system, according to the needs of the applicants.
  13. Gather all information’s relating to the use of vehicles, to prepare cost recovery for the various projects.
  14. Prepare invoices relating to the use of vehicles for official/private purposes.
  15. Enter data into the system to generate statistics.
  16. Prepare monthly statistical reports on the office’s vehicles.
  17. Establish and maintain, at the request of his/her supervisor, good links with suppliers.
  18. Transport (by driving) the various project staff and teams (technical and financial teams) for the implementation of activities.
  19. Support day-to-day activities in the field by transporting teams and equipment in the project’s areas of intervention.
  20. Report on the condition of vehicles and recommend repairs.
  21. Carry out all other tasks as requested by line management.
  22. Ensure passenger safety and the good condition of the vehicle.

Profile:

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum BEPC + 3 years’ experience in a similar position in an international organization or [TN2] Minimum First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC)  + 5 years’ experience in an international organization or multinational company.
  • Hold a valid Category D driving license.
  • At least 5 years’ experience of working in the South-West, North-West and Littoral Regions. Knowledge of other project intervention zones such as the East and South Regions (Bertoua, Yokadouma, Mambele, Ngoyla, Kribi, Campo, etc.) would be an asset.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience of working with partners (Protected Area Conservators, Heads of Units, Ecoguards, etc.) would be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and good knowledge of Pidgin and French.
