Specialist – Accounting and Reconciliation Finance
Job Description

Responsibilities
Strategy & Analytics, Budgeting, Data and Reporting

Execute policies, procedures and guidelines cascaded by the functional lead and ensure compliance with the same

Comply with the set governance mechanisms, under supervision from the functional lead

Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of Accounting strategies and propose and offer suggestions for improvements
Accounting Operations
-
Manage the monthly financial close process, including ensuring all costs incurred are properly recorded, reviewing journal entries, account balance reconciliations and report preparation
-
Participate in the ongoing development/establishment, review and implementation of process and system changes for accounting activities
-
Participate in strategic financial projects including upgrades and implementation of systems and software
-
Ensure compliance with internal control policies
-
Collaborate with external auditors to ensure successful audit results and compliance
-
Interact at all levels and with budget owners or other stakeholders to produce timely, efficient and accurate month-end close and all internal management and financial reporting through annual report
-
Administers one or more accounting systems: Journal entries, General Ledger, Accounts Receivables, Accounts Payable, Revenue Reconciliation, Cash Flows, etc. in accordance with GAAP policies and procedures.

Posts ledger and general journal entries.

Reconcile bank accounts and statements
-
Perform period end activities, (Closing GL, balance sheet reconciliations etc)

Perform fixed asset accounting

Ensure that accruals are complete and accounted for monthly

Prepare and load monthly cash flows
-
Load, match and post transactions in the system, including non-cash transactions for Cash Flow Statements
-
Balance off all intercompany accounts on a monthly basis (ensure no intercompany validations in the system)

Prepare all General Ledger reconciliations including all third party loans reconciliations
-
Management fees – calculate management fees per the Management and Service Fees contracts
-
Maintain the fixed assets registers for the Opco
-
Responsible for hierarchy and scalability in chart of accounts and accuracy in the general ledger and financial statements and exercise authority over classification and booking of all transactions

Analyze the effect of statutory accounting practices and study regulations and guidance to ensure correct application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
-
Prepare cost centre operating expenses reports and send to the relevant cost centre owners. Liaise with Management Accountants.

Resolve all operating expenses allocation queries
-
Authorise all re-allocations in consultation with budget holders
-
Make recommendations for changes as needed and ensure that company policies and procedures are followed and establish the proper techniques to discover and prevent fraud

Prepare detailed journal entries and account analyses

Assist with compilation of information for preparation of tax returns
-
Work with Audit, Tax and Treasury Manager to ensure overall coordination of all financial accounting activities through annual report

Prepare summary feedback of financial statements variances to budget

Actively review and advise on financial/accounting processes

Qualifications
Education:
– A Degree in Finance or Accounting, management or related field
– Professional Accounting Qualification – CA /CFA/ACCA/CPA is an advantage
Experience:
– A minimum of 2 to 3 years’ total experience in Accounting or allied field is required
– Experience in Fintech, banking or Mobile Money is preferred
– Experience working in a global/multinational enterprise with a good understanding emerging markets is preferred

Responsibilities
Liquidity & Cash Flow Management
– Ensure daily visibility of MTNC’s cash position across all operating and collection bank accounts.
– Prepare, consolidate, and monitor daily, weekly, and monthly cash flow forecasts, incorporating business inputs, committed payments, regulatory constraints, and funding requirements.
– Analyse variances between forecasted and actual cash flows, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions to improve forecast accuracy.
– Support working capital optimisation initiatives by providing timely and reliable cash insights.
– Ensure availability of funds to meet operational, statutory, and strategic obligations at all times.
Treasury Operations & Execution
– Execute approved treasury transactions including local and foreign currency payments in line with Delegation of Authority and internal approval workflows.
– Coordinate the preparation, submission, and follow-up of foreign exchange applications with partner banks and the Central Bank, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of documentation.
– Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of Letters of Credit (LCs) and Bank Guarantees (BGs), including issuance, amendments, utilisation, expiry, and closure.
– Support the investment of surplus cash in line with approved treasury and investment policies.
– Monitor settlement of treasury transactions and resolve exceptions promptly.
Bank & Counterparty Management
– Maintain and manage MTNC’s operational banking structure, including account openings, closures, mandates, and signatory management.
– Maintain effective working relationships with partner banks to ensure service continuity and timely issue resolution.
– Review bank charges, fees, and interest calculations, investigate discrepancies, and support initiatives to optimise banking costs.
– Support periodic bank performance reviews and provide operational inputs to Senior Manager.
Risk Management & Internal Controls
– Identify, monitor, and mitigate treasury-related risks including liquidity risk, foreign exchange risk, interest rate risk, counterparty risk, and operational risk.
– Ensure timely preparation, review, and clearance of all bank reconciliations, investigating and resolving reconciling items within agreed timelines.
– Maintain a strong treasury control environment in line with MTN internal control framework and audit requirements.
– Contribute to the Finance risk register and ensure timely implementation of agreed mitigation actions.
Reporting & Decision Support
– Prepare and review treasury reports and dashboards covering cash position, liquidity forecasts, FX exposure, bank balances, and outstanding regulatory applications.
– Provide accurate and timely treasury inputs to Senior Manager, CFO, Group Treasury, and other stakeholders.
– Proactively escalate material risks, cash constraints, forecast deviations, and regulatory issues with clear analysis and recommendations.
Governance, Compliance & Audit
– Ensure full compliance with MTN Group Treasury policies, procedures, and Delegation of Authority.
– Ensure adherence to Central Bank, statutory, and regulatory requirements related to treasury operations.
– Support internal, external, and regulatory audits by preparing documentation, responding to queries, and implementing agreed audit actions.
– Ensure all treasury activities are conducted in line with MTN Code of Conduct.
People & Stakeholder Management
– Supervise, coach, and develop treasury team members to ensure high performance and continuity.
– Ensure effective knowledge transfer, documentation of processes, and succession planning.
– Work closely with Finance Operations, Tax, FP&A, Shared Services, and Business teams to support end-to-end financial processes.
– Maintain effective collaboration with Group Treasury and Finance Centres of Excellence.
Qualifications
Education:

Minimum of 3 years university degree in Commerce/Finance or relevant field

Post graduate degree in Finance / Business Management/CPA/Chartered Accountant and / or similar professional accreditation

Fluent in English and language of country preferable

Experience:

Minimum of 5–7 years’ experience in Treasury, Cash Management, or Financial Operations.

Experience operating in a regulated and/or multinational environment, preferably telecommunications or banking.

Strong hands-on experience in cash forecasting, banking operations, and foreign exchange management.

Proven experience working with ERP systems (Oracle preferred).Deep knowledge and understanding of continuous improvement through the implementation of best practices (Corporate Performance Management)

Experience working in a global/multinational enterprise (understanding emerging markets advantageous).

Strong understanding and knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)

Advanced proficiency in financial software (e.g., SAP, Oracle), data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and MS Office (Word, Excel-advanced, and Outlook)

Task Complexity:
- Develop and maintain new and existing voice products, services and promotions
- Own the product development process for voice products/services throughout the product lifecycle, from idea collection and requirements phase through to the go-to-market execution and subsequent product management and maintenance

Participate in cross-functional CRRM change management forums that are required to manage change across the organization, including all business units and provide guidelines/recommendations to minimize revenue leakage

Qualifications

3–5+ years in credit underwriting / credit risk / vetting (telecoms, fintech, banking, or utilities).

Experience with postpaid products, collections/DPD dynamics, and fraud controls a strong plus.

Familiarity with IFRS 9 concepts (ECL drivers), KYC/AML standards, and data privacy requirements
Functional Knowledge:
- Credit analysis: consumer & SME/enterprise (financials, ratios, cashflow proxies, bureau data).
- Credit scoring, decision engines, rule-based vetting.
- Understanding of revenue assurance, collections strategy, and dunning cycles.
- Proficiency with CRM/Billing (e.g., Siebel/Salesforce, Amdocs/Convergent Billing), risk tools (bureaus, IDV).
- Strong Excel/Power BI; basic SQL a plus.
