The exhibition โOnce upon a time… the birth of Staat Kamerun 1884-1914โ invites you to an unprecedented journey to the heart of the German colonial period in Cameroon
The exhibition project ยซOnce upon a time… the birth of Staat Kamerun 1884-1914ยป was initiated by the National Museum of Cameroon, doualโart and the Goethe-Institut in close collaboration with MARKK Hamburg, with the support of the German Foreign Office and Brot fรผr die Welt for the World. For the first time, it opens a dialogue between historical facts, traditional objects and contemporary art dealing with the period of Imperial Germanyโs violent intrusion into the territory of Cameroon.
From a wide range of perspectives, the exhibition examines the new rules and codes introduced under German colonial rule, which have had a lasting impact on the social, cultural and economic fabric of Cameroon to this day. The exhibition highlights the changes, particularly in terms of their significance for Cameroonian societies and from the perspective of power. Based on the need to develop a shared understanding of Cameroonian history, the project also aims to encourage a wide-ranging public debate which, in addition to the exhibition, will be supported by participatory workshops aimed at different target groups and age groups);
